Bag Making Master Class

Class #1 - Introduction and construction of Cork Zippered Quilted Pouch with tassel.

  •        The required book for this class is “A Field Guide to Making Bags” by Jessica Barrera (aka Sally Tomato). It provides a comprehensive review of supplies needed, techniques used and patterns to follow for making bags, pouches, purses, totes etc.
  •        Please look through the book prior to class time.  It will provide lots of useful information with useful advice and photos.
  •        For the duration of this class, we'll be making bags using the patterns provided at the end of the book. We’ll begin during week #1 With the Zippered Quilted Pouch and Tassel beginning on page 103.

Supplies for Class #1

The required kit for the Cork Zippered Quilted Pouch with Tassel is available at Tiger Lily Quilt Shop. This kit will have all materials, zipper and hardware needed for the project.  For our future classes, you will make your own selection of materials and hardware for your bags. Sewing supplies listed below will be used for all our bags in future classes.

Sewing machine in good working order (please bring manual).  Don’t forget your cords and foot pedal.

Machine needles: Size 14 Denim needles or Topstitch needles are preferred. These needles are sharp, strong, long and designed to handle heavyweight fabrics and multiple layers. They have bigger eyes to accommodate thicker thread.

Machine Presser Feet: all-purpose foot, zipper foot, narrow foot, Teflon foot, walking foot.  You may have these feet and never used them or not have them at all.  Best advice is to bring the presser feet you have with your machine and we’ll explore.

Thread: 40 wt. thread is recommended.  40 wt. is strong and looks substantial when used for top stitching.  A neutral beige – light brown in color will match the cork used for our first project.

Scissors: Sallie Tomato 6-inch Sewing Scissors or a similar type of scissor is highly recommended. They are designed for cutting heavy weight materials like cork and vinyl. They are strong and sharp and make cutting and clipping edges easy.

Additional supplies:

  •        Irons and boards will be on hand in the classroom.  If you prefer a mini iron and mat, please bring it.
  •        Rotary cutter with new blade.
  •        Mats and rulers are available in the classroom but if you have favorites, bring them.
  •        Seam ripper
  •        Chalk marker or other disappearing fabric marker.
  •        Edge/corner turning tool
  •        Fabric clips (like Wonder clips)
  •        Seam roller tool (like Clover Press Perfect) is useful

Glues and tapes: We’ll explore options. I use various options and will have them on hand to share.  Bring along any that you have on hand  from the following list and we’ll explore.

  •        Fabric/ craft  glue – stick, pen or liquid
  •        Hot glue gun
  •        Spray basting glue
  •        Fray Check/Block
  •        ¼” Double sided sticky tape

We’ll be using numerous other tools as we move through the patterns in the book.  These include, awls, mallets, punches, pliers, screwdrivers, etc.  We’ll explore these and their uses as we move along through the patterns and they’ll be on hand in class for sharing.

If you have any questions or concerns prior to class, please call me and I’ll be happy to assist.  I’m looking forward to working with you and sharing the fun and rewards of making bags!

Thanks,

Linda Aaronson
